You will experiment with your grip. Whether you start with the overlapping grip, the interlocking grip or the two handed grip will be a matter of choice. You’ll experiment a little. You might move your hands to various positions, your V’s may point in different places, who knows? We believe that as beginning golfers advance, the grip becomes even more personalized. You will want to end in a productive place, so remember to take each experiment as an experiment. You are learning your individual grip.

One dangerous by-product of grip experimentation is that it often leads to bad habits. While grips are designed for differing hand sizes, finger lengths and purposes, all grips have certain similarities.

The club should be gripped primarily by the fingers, not the palms. If you practice a lot, palm calluses tell you something about your grip. They are in the wrong place!

Golfers do not usually talk about the heel of their palm. Hey, the heel of your hand is important. If you are right handed, the heel of your left hand must stay on the club. It is easy to let the club and the heel separate. Lifting the heel is a bad idea, a very bad habit. Of course, you’re the heel of your right hand must stay in contact with your left hand unless you are a two fisted guy. Then, the heel of the right hand stays on the shaft of the club.

The best place to check your heel contact is at the wrist cock and at the top of your swing. Those are two locations where it is easy to lose the heel. Work on maintaining heel contact through the swing. Stay on the club for power and accuracy.

Once we realise that the grip is the only connection between the player and the golf club – we will also realise why it is so crucial to get this part of our game right. Essentially, we need to achieve the correct golf grip.

Placing your hands correctly on the club will give you the best possible control of the club face at impact with the ball. For the perfect grip, the club should be held in the fingers more than in the palm of the hand.

Beginning with your left hand (right handed golfers), lay the grip across your fingers` joints – running at an angle from the base joint of your little finger to the first joint of your index finger. Wrap your fingers around the grip and place your thumb to the right side of the shaft (left side for left-handers). When you look down at the back of your hand, you should see two knuckles – those of your index and middle fingers.

Place your right hand below your left hand on the shaft,(reverse for left-handers), using either the overlap or interlocking grip. Initially, as with any change you make to your swing, set-up, grip, etc. it will feel rather strange, but after some time and practice it will soon become second nature.

Another important element which, helps with the correct golf grip, is the wearing of a glove. The reason for wearing a glove is to enable us to grip the club as lightly as possible while still having control of it. The lighter we are able to grip the club, the faster we are able to swing – which in turn generates more club head speed, which equalsgreater distance.

We can also use the glove as an indicator of an incorrect grip – if you notice excessive wear in the heel or palm of your glove, then your grip may need some adjustment or fine-tuning.

There are however some general areas of agreement amongst the best Teachers and Players in the World and these are:

The Correct Golf Grip needs to be learned! If you’ve never played Golf before in your life and I was to give you a Golf Club, you would almost certainly instinctively hold it in a way that would firstly, hinder the amount of Club Head speed that you could generate, i.e. you wouldn’t be maximising the potential distance you are capable of achieving and secondly, you would find it very difficult to get the Club Face back to square at impact on a consistent basis, i.e. you’d be spraying it all over the place.
Learn the Correct Golf Grip to begin with! of course it can be changed at any time but the longer your muscles and brain get used to a faulty Grip the longer it will take to feel comfortable when applying the Correct Golf Grip. However, if you want to start playing better Golf and reach your potential, then the pain and frustration that you will go through will be well worth it.
The Palms of each hand should be facing each other, or probably slightly inwards! If you stand up and let you arms hang naturally down by your sides you will notice their positions and this is how they should facing each other on the Grip to encourage them to work together. If they are not aligned in a parallel position then they will be working against each other and result in a greater lack of Club Head speed and consistency.
Grip Pressure, it should be light enough to encourage Club Head speed and Feel and firm enough to stop the club from turning in your hands. Think about the feel you get when shaking someone’s hands, not too firm so your crushing it and not to light that it slips out.

Ultimately you need to find the Correct Golf Grip that you feel comfortable with and one which will help you achieve your best potential results.

In terms of Choices and Preferences, there are 3 main Correct Golf Grip styles:

Overlapping Grip
Interlocking Grip
Ten Finger Grip

The Overlapping Grip which would generally be considered the Correct Golf Grip for Golfers with large fingers and strong hands and was introduced by one of the games great players Harry Vardon.

The Interlocking Grip should be considered if you have smaller weaker hands, as you may feel you hands are more secure and unified with this Correct Golf Grip. Jack Nicholas is a great example of someone who uses this type of Grip

The Ten Finger Grip is generally used by Juniors or ladies with smaller hands and not recommended for those outside of this group, as the right hand will have a tendency to put more pressure on the shaft and make it difficult for both hands to work as equal partner.

Yet, despite all the practice you put in, a consistently good golf swing eludes you.

This article will give you 5 simple steps formula that will guarantee you literally “get a grip” on your game and swing like a pros.

Here’s an undeniable fact. Your hands are the only point of contact between you and the golf club. In other words, to get a good golf swing, your grip has to focus all that force you generate from your body and transfer it to the club.

1. Open you left palm.

Imagine a straight line joining the fleshy pad at the base of your index finger to the fleshy pad at the base of your pinky.

Place the rubber grip of the golf club on this imaginary line.

2. Curl your fingers around the top of the rubber grip. With your fingers stabilising the club, wrap your palm over your fingers and the rubber grip.

Your thumb should rest comfortably straight on the shaft of the club, pointing towards the club head. Repeat the mantra “fingers-palm-thumb”.

3. Bring your right hand below your left hand.

4. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to wrap your right fingers and palm around the club and your left thumb.

One last step to go before you master this simple grip which will form the foundation for a good golf swing.

5. Your palms MUST face each other. Your left palm will be hidden inside your right palm.

Your right thumb will be visibly resting on the club shaft, pointing towards the club head.

The 2 most common problems facing golfers today has to be slicing and inconsistent ball striking. The high handicapper struggles with both, not knowing where their ball is going to end up once it leaves the tee. Luckily, sometimes the solution to slicing the ball is the same solution to hitting it more consistently.

Do you find yourself aiming purposely to the left so that when your ball is done slicing to the right, you might end up somewhere on or around the fairway? That’s a sign that your slice has gotten out of control, and you need to try to fix it with a golf grip change.

There are really only two reasons that a golf ball is sliced, and one of them is an open clubface. With an open clubface, you put an incredible amount of sidespin on the ball, leading to a wicked slice that lands in the woods, water, or other course. The key, then, is to return the golf club face to the square position when it strikes the ball.

One ailment that may be leading to an open clubface is a weak, improper grip. By gripping the club incorrectly, your club face opens at impact and send the golf ball wherever it feels like going.

There is no single correct grip. There are actually 3 common types of grips, but all grips vary a little bit differently from each other. There are, however, a few things that are very similar in all correct golf grips.

First, ensure you’re gripping the club as tight as you need to. It should be a relatively loose grip, but firm enough to keep the club from flying away when you swing.

Second, ensure your “V”‘s are aligned correctly, pointing to your right shoulder (if you’re a right-hander).

These are just a few commonalities all correct grips have in common. If you check these first, you may find that your grip is severely lacking and may be the cause of your ailing, inconsistent swing.

Learning the proper way to grip a golf club is so important to your success in golf. This is your only contact with the club, so you’ve got to get it right. You may think it’s simple enough, but after 15 years and a 6 handicap later, I found out my grip was wrong and it was causing several bad swing faults, that I would never have cured unless I learned the proper grip on the club. But once I did, it was amazing how fast I was able to correct my faults and you too will be able to do the same.

Your grip should feel natural. There should be no torquing or twisting of your hands when you put them on the club. Many times, teaching pros will torque your left hand way over, and then your right way under, which is considered a strong grip, but when you do that, does it feel natural? Do you feel like you can make a swing holding it like that? I’ll bet not! If that’s the case, do NOT hold it like that. Period!

The goal in golf is to make it as natural feeling as possible. The minute we add discomfort tension creeps in and swing faults occur.

So lets look how your hands hang naturally. Let them hang down; give your arms and hands a shake, then look down at your hands. What do you see? If you’re relaxed, you should see the palms of both hands nearly facing your thighs. Am I right? Now… look again at your hands and imagine bringing them together to grip your club. You won’t be able to exactly put your hands on it, but this is as close to a perfect grip as you can get.

What I like to call it is a strong left hand and a weak right hand, but this is a perfect blending of both hands that will eliminate all tension in your arms and shoulders, allowing you to hit with maximum clubhead speed. This may seem like an unconventional approach to your grip, but after experiencing this for myself, I can clearly attest to an improvement that would not have happened unless I made this change.

You can practice this right in your home with a club laying around your house. Do what I said, and check to make sure there is no tension. If so, you’re on your way to a better game.

A good golf swing starts off with the correct golf grip. There is however no such thing as one correct golf grip. This is the first of a three part series in which I will give you all you need to know to get the correct golf grip for you.

No two people are identical (ok so there are a few twins out there jumping up and down – well I count you guys as one). We are different heights, weight and have different size hands, arms legs and stances – all of which determine the correct golf grip for each individual.

A good grip is a compromise between power and control, and it does not matter much which type of grip you favor. The important thing is that the hands should work together in the swing. If the hands do not work together your ability to control the clubface and create clubhead speed is impeded.

The following is the technique for getting your hands on to the golf club for the correct grip.

For this illustration I will refer to the target hand and the non-target hand – left and right hand respectively for right handed golfers and right and left hand for left handed golfers.

Target hand. Let your target arm hang naturally by the side of the grip before bringing it across to take hold of the club. About 1 inch of the grip should protrude above where it rests across your hand. Your thumb should fall slightly to the non-target side of center, and your third and little fingers should grip hardest. These are important pressure points. The club must rest diagonally across your fingers, seated underneath the fleshy pad on your left hand. The V between your thumb and forefinger should point somewhere between your chin and your non-target shoulder. Your target hand supports the club and maintains the club head in the correct position through impact with the ball. The target hand is the strong hand in the grip.

Non-Target Hand. Once you have the club correctly positioned in your target hand allow your non-target arm to hang naturally by your side. Bring your hand up to the club and grip the club so that the shaft is supported by the joints of all, except your index, fingers. Imagine holding a rock that you are going to throw to skim across a pond. This is the same feeling you want. The fleshy part of your non-target hand is then wrapped over the thumb of the target hand to form a V between your thumb and forefinger. This V should point roughly between your chin and your non-target shoulder. Your non-target hand is going to release the club head just before impact. The release gives the club head the power and speed to get maximum distance.

By matching the V’s formed by the thumb and forefinger of both hands you set your hands parallel to each other, which encourages them to work as a unit during the swing.

Practice gripping the club for a week or until such time as you are comfortable that your hands are working together.

I have read countless articles and talked to many professionals and they all try to make the grip harder than it really needs to be. The grip is actually very easy.

First off, interlock or not?

Well that is totally up to which feels better for you. Personally I interlock my right pinky and left fore finger. It is how I have been doing it for years. Many pros interlock including tiger woods. The majority of players, however, overlap these two fingers. It is really all up to how you prefer it.

Next up, the V’s!

When you grip the club, your forefingers and thumbs will create a “V” on each hand. If these Vs are pointed in between your right cheek and right shoulder you are fine. Anywhere outside of this and you have an overly weak or overly strong grip. Avoid these two at all costs.

But where exactly should the V’s be pointing?

Like I said, the Vs need to be pointing in between your right cheek and your right shoulder. Where in between, is actually up to you. Some players prefer the Vs pointing right on the side of the cheek, for others this is much to weak of a grip. You will need to experiment with where exactly works for you.

Generally the V’s should be pointing to the same place.

If you look at the grips of professionals, their Vs almost always both point to the same place. This allows both hands to work as one, rather than fighting against each other.

There are three basic golf grips that you can use: the overlapping grip, the baseball grip, and the interlocking grip. Well cover each of those in a minute. Heres the basic rule for gripping a golf club.

Start by holding the club directly in front of you with your right hand with the club head pointing away from you at about a 45 degree angle.

Next grip the club with your left hand. The club will be mainly in the palm across the pads at the base of the fingers. However, the club will lie across the first section of the index finger. The thumb will be positioned straight on top of the golf club shaft. Relative to the golf club, the thumb will be in the twelve oclock position.

Now, with your right hand, grip the golf club just above your left hand with the fingers, not the palm, of your right hand. The thumb will be positioned slightly off to the left. Relative to the golf club, the thumb will be in an eleven oclock position.

If you have gripped the golf club correctly, only the first two knuckles of your left hand will be visible. Also, your left thumb should be completely hidden under your right hand. The index finger position of your right hand will look and feel like a gun trigger finger. Here are three of the most common golf grips and how to use them:

1- The overlapping grip is the most common golf grip used. It is used mostly by male golfers and those with strong wrists and forearms. The little finger of the right hand lies on top of or overlaps the index finger on the left hand.

2- The baseball grip is most commonly used by younger golfers, females, seniors, and those with weaker wrists and arms. The index finger of the left hand and the little finger of the right hand meet but do not overlap or interlock.

3- An interlocking grip will be used by golfers with shorter hands and fingers, those with thicker or chunkier palms, and golfers who have difficulty with the overlapping grip. The index finger of the left hand and the little finger of the right hand overlap each other and interlock.

If your golf grip pressure is right, the club could almost be pulled out of your hands, but not quite. A correct golf grip will make you feel as if you are holding the club mostly in the palm and last three fingers of your left hand. Regardless, both hands should hold the club with equal pressure. A correct golf grip doesnt guarantee a successful golf swing, however, a defective golf grip will almost always result in a failed golf swing.
