There are almost as many theories about the golf swing as there are instructors. And one of the least understood aspects of the swing is the rotation of the hips to an “open” position just before impact.

Most contemporary golf instructors believe it is necessary to “clear your hips just before the point of impact” in order to get your hips out of the way of your hands. According to this theory, if you don’t “clear your hips” your hands and arms will be impeded and will not be able to attack the ball with power.

This is sometimes used as an explanation for why an overly “vertical” stance is not a good thing. According to this line of thinking, when you stand too close to the ball your hands will not be able to make a clean pass in front of your body because on the way down your hips will get in the way.

But while hip rotation is very important to the effectiveness of the golf swing, it is not because the hips are in the way of anything. In fact I can’t see that this idea of “clearing the hips” makes much sense. Your hips are not in the way of your hands. In fact, rotating your hips towards the target pushes your backside out further towards your hands and puts your hips more in the way than if you did not rotate them.

Most of us — whether we rotate a lot or not — are not in the habit of hitting our hips with our hands when we swing our golf clubs. The reason is simple: our hips do not get in the way of our swing, and to suggest this as an explanation of the importance of hip rotation is just plain misleading.

In my own research, on the course and in my basement “lab”, I have found that hip rotation does indeed put the club on a more powerful, more direct path to the ball coming into the point of impact. But as far as I can tell, this has very little to do with getting your hips out of the way of your hands.

What happens when you rotate your hips is that this allows you to get your shoulders and arms in the optimal power position. This happens because your upper body and lower body move in a synchronized way. In the golf swing, as in most other movements involving the human body, your upper body, including your shoulders and arms, moves in harmony with and in response to the movement of your lower body — your hips and legs.

Think of a power hitter in baseball. Those classic photographs of Ted Williams, Hank Aaron, Reggie Jackson or Barry Bonds making contact with the ball always tell the same story. Their arms are fully extended, hips are rotated to an open position, head is back, and they are perfectly balanced with most of their weight now centered over their front leg and hip. In fact they have used their front leg and hip as a pivot around which their upper body has rotated. Take that pivot away — swing with just your shoulders and arms — and you’re left with a much less fluid, much less coordinated, and much less powerful swing.

In the golf swing this connection of upper and lower body is less obvious because the golf swing is a combination of vertical and horizontal. But the principle is the same. The rotation of the hips pulls your upper torso around and gets your lead shoulder into the correct position (the left shoulder in the case of a right hander) at the point of impact. Ben Hogan described this hip movement as a matter of throwing your lead hip around and back against the wall — one of the most useful images in all of golf instruction.

Try it in slow motion. Place your club head along the swing path about 18″-24″ behind the ball (on the inside/out arc). Make sure your lead hand and arm are straightened as they should be in the impact position. Now rotate your hips so the club head moves towards the ball (keeping your hands and arms locked in the previous position).

Notice that when your club head reaches the ball, your hips will be “cleared”, and your lead shoulder will be rotated as well. Your lead arm will be in the correct “power position” with the arm and club shaft forming a more or less straight line down to the ball.

Now pick your club up and swing it more horizontally like a baseball bat. If you have had any baseball training at all, your hips will just naturally lead the swing and your shoulders, arms and “bat” will follow.

In fact trying to make an “all-arms” swing without hip rotation will feel awkward and unsynchronized. Your arms will not be able to follow the momentum that wants to carry them around to a natural finish. This is why golfers who do not “finish” their swing by rotating their lower body will often snap the club back to the starting position.

The basic principle here is one taught by golf teachers since teachers first started analyzing the swing: upper body follows lower body. Coming to a better appreciation of this principle can only have a positive impact on your golf swing.

Dont grip your golf set too tightly. Grip pressure is a big factor in your golf swing and one thats often overlooked. If you grip the club with a death lock, chances are you wont allow the club to properly release.

For most golfers it is the golf slice that gives us the most headaches out on the golf course. But, for many others who hook the golf ball, the problem can be just as frustrating. So, how can you stop hooking the golf ball and begin hitting more fairways? It’s easier than you might think and I’m going to show you how to get immediate results.

Stance – Position the ball in the middle or a little forward in your stance. For most golfers who hook the ball I see them position the ball too far back in their stance. You want to keep the ball in the middle or even with your left heel (if you’re right-handed). Make sure you position your feet toward your target line. Both of the tips of your toes should be even, or a little to the left of the target line. This more open stance will help reduce the chances of hooking the golf ball. Don’t position your left foot more forward in your stance than your right. Keep them even.

Grip – Grip the club with your hands facing straight down. Golfers who hook the ball tend to set up with their right hand facing too far toward the left side. You want to make sure the “V” formation your hands create by holding the golf club is pointing straight up to your nose. This will go a long way in eliminating a golf hook. The other aspect to a proper golf grip that will eliminate hooking the ball is grip strength. Try not to grip the club too firmly. What happens with an overly firm grip is that when you swing your right hand will turn over and come around, automatically causing you to hook the ball. Use a little less strength in your grip and you should immediately start seeing better results.

Weight – You want to be sure that after your backswing your weight is more on your left foot. Many times a golfer will hook the ball due to the majority of their weight being on their right foot, or back foot. By doing that, you can rest assured you will hook the golf ball every time. It creates a closed clubface by forcing you to come around with the club. If you or you see someone else hit a snap-hook, this is what happened. Be conscious of where your weight is when you finish your golf swing and you can correct this problem immediately.

These are just a few simple tips to help in eliminating that dreaded golf hook. By simply going to the driving range and putting these tips into practice you will start to see immediate results that will translate into lower scores out on the course.

The first thing that is done when you pick up a gold club is to grip it. Learning to properly grip a golf club must be pretty important then, right? Yes, it sure is! The fundamentals of your swing are based around a proper grip. It is therefore very hard to correctly swing a club without a correct grip.

There is more than one correct grip, and I am going to show you three of them. At first, changing your grip may feel uncomfortable, but that is completely normal. You will get used to your new grip eventually.

The Fundamentals:

The fundamentals to properly grip a golf club are the same for each type of grip. Now, when placing your hands on the club, first place your left hand on the club (for right handed golfers). Now, rest the club on the ground. Your thumb should be pointed towards the ground, and your fingers should be wrapped around the club. Notice that your thumb and index finger will make a V. This V should be pointing towards your chin. Next, place your right hand on the club below your left hand. The palm of your right hand should fit right on top of your left thumb. The V that your right hand makes, should point to your right shoulder.

The Baseball Grip:

As its name implies, with the baseball grip, the golf club is gripped similar to how a baseball bat is gripped. The hands will lie next to each other on the golf club. The pinky of the right hand will lie next to the index finger of the left, but not overlap.

The Overlapping Grip

In the overlapping grip, instead of the hands lying side by side, the pinky on the right hand will rest on top of the space between the index and middle fingers of the left.

The Interlocking Grip

My personal favorite is the interlocking grip. In this variation, the pinky of the right hand, and the index finger of the left hand will interlock.

Make sure to grip the club with little pressure; just enough so that the club does not go flying out of your hands when you swing. No matter what grip you choose, if you are not currently gripping the club properly, than gripping correctly may feel uncomfortable at first. Get used to your new grip at the range. Then once you feel relatively comfortable with it, bring it to the course.

A great backswing requires practice and understanding the biomechanics of golf swing.

A good backswing starts with your hands, and then the arms and shoulders follow in one smooth motion.

Swing easily and smoothly. When you are ready, tee the ball up and swing away. Swing issues and technical moves should be worked out on the practice range.

Shorter backswings and the longer ones are both relative to the amount of shoulder rotation each golfer creates. John Daly can turn his shoulders back more than 90 degrees.

Shorter players will have a flatter swing with elbow closer to the side as they generate power from added hip turn and leg drive. Taller players will have a more vertical or upright swing, generating clubhead speed more from the width of arc; they will probably find a close-in elbow constricting.

Backswing Form

In order to learn how to get more extension and turn when initiating your backswing, I’m providing you with a few simple tips, here. The mistake that most players make is loosening up their grip too much, especially with the left hand (on right-handed players).

By all means, loosening your grip will definitely help your clubhead extend further behind your body, but remember that you must re-tighten the left hand. This causes a change in the alignment of your clubhead. The result is far less accuracy when hitting the ball.

It is best to always maintain a firm, yet light grip on the club. Varying your grip pressure during a swing is not recommended.

By far, the best way to increase the arc on your backswing is to turn your left shoulder further until it has reached a point over the right foot. This way you will always have a full turn, thus creating the fastest speed of swing that you can possibly generate, while still maintaining balance and grace.

The Top Of Your Swing

At the top of your backswing, always check the position of the club shaft in order to be sure that you are on the proper plane and accomplishing a full backswing. The club should be perfectly parallel to your target line, and the clubhead should literally be pointing at the target.

An easy way to determine the changes that are needed in your swing is to have a partner examine your moves. Better yet, have your partner videotape your swing. In this way, you can determine the changes that are needed so that your club will point directly towards the target and your swing will be on the correct plane.

If you are right-handed, then check to see if the club is pointing left of your target. If so, then the club is considered to be “laid off” which typically results in a slice. When the club is pointing right of your target then you have “crossed over” which may result in a hook.

With a little work and practice you can fine tune your backswing so that the clubhead will always be pointing directly towards the target.

A famous golfer once said that golf is a game for a lifetime. Work on it and you will have a wonderful lifetime of golf.
