Nobody likes to slice the golf ball as it results in both loss of distance and accuracy which in turn costs you strokes on the golf course. The way to get rid of that nasty slice is not really difficult but will require you to analyze your current swing and fix some of those mechanical errors that are causing the slice. Here are a few tips that can help you hit straighter shots more often:

Tip 1: Keep the right hand passive (right handed players)

Many players in their efforts to hit the ball far use their dominant right hand to try to muscle the club through the hitting zone. The problem with this strategy is that it usually results in poor shots since using the right hand tends to cause a problem known as casting.

Casting is simply releasing the club too early which result in an outside to in club path that imparts slice spin on the golf ball. One good way to eliminate this is to focus instead on pulling the club with your left hand on the downswing. This will help to almost naturally cause the clubhead to move in an inside to out swing path which is ideal for straight golf shots.

Tip 2: Use less wrists during the swing

It is best to avoid using the wrist too much during the golf swing. Think of your wrists as simply a support mechanism. Focus on making good shoulder turns and hip movements that produce an inside to out swing path. Using the wrists too much during the downswing will cause the club to usually release early which results in loss of power and slices.

Tip 3: Move the hips laterally rather than turning them during the downswing

Turning the hips too much on the downswing can cause a slice shot since it throws the club head to an outside to in path. Your hips should slide slightly towards the target through impact so avoid turning them too early. The hips should turn after impact when the momentum of the follow through naturally causes them to rotate.

Tip 4: Keep the head down through impact

This is a common tip given to all new players but it is important nonetheless. Raising the head up too early can cause the club to come from the outside and cause a slice shot. Make sure your head stays down through impact and comes up naturally with the right shoulder as the follow through completes.

Tip 5: Be sure the club is square at the address position

If the club head is open (pointing to the right of the target) at address then this will cause slice spin. Check the club head during address and make sure that it is facing the target.

Tip 6: Slow down your tempo

Tempo is unique to every player. Some players will naturally have a fast tempo and others a slower one. However, if you are always slicing the ball then try to slow down your tempo slightly especially on the downswing. Swinging too fast can throw off your mechanics in many areas that can result in slices so slow things up a little to help in your efforts to hit the ball straighter. It is said that the majority of golfers suffer from one form of a slice or another. It can very often lead to reduced distance, lost balls in the rough and most irritatingly a disappointing score. It is possible to take steps to cure your slice. This article will offer a number of quick and easy steps to help solve your problem.

The slice is the product of an ‘outside – in’ swing plane where the clubface is open at contact with the ball. The result is a squirt to the right. It can be so bad that the ball can literally fly off on a right angled trajectory. Common reasons why this happens are a lack of full shoulder rotation, standing too upright, weak grip and a stiff swing to name but a few. Lets get in to some of the ways you can remedy these problems and get your handicap down to where you want it to be.

Check to see if your stance is too open at address. If your shoulders are aiming too far left and you are aiming your clubface at the target then you will cut across the ball. Try bringing your stance round so that your shoulders are almost aiming directly at the target.

To help flatten your swing plane be sure to bend from your hips to the ground. Standing too upright promotes too steep a downswing. Try and imagine you are swinging a baseball bat.

If you can’t see any of your knuckles on your left hand (your right hand if you play left handed) then your grip is ‘weak’. This will promote a slice so move your hand round the grip so you can see 2 of your knuckles.

A simple way of reducing slice can be addressing the ball with the clubface slightly closed. If your tendency is always to open the clubface at contact this may help in straightening out your shot.

To get you to have the correct shoulder rotation and stance so that the swing plane is moving ‘inside-out’ try this drill. Take your driver and place it across your shoulders. Have the grip by your left shoulder sticking out. Now set up as you would normally and make your shoulder rotation.

When you have completed the backswing the butt of the grip should be pointing about a foot beyond the ball. Anything nearer and your swing plane is probably too steep and you are likely to slice the ball. Practice getting your set up and shoulder rotation so that the butt ends in the correct position.

Try this to help promote a nice loose swing with the shoulders rotating fully through the swing. Stand with your legs together and play as you normally would. You will sacrifice distance but you will also discover a more consistent swing through proper shoulder rotation. This reduces the domination of the arms in the swing which often leads to the club moving off plane and cutting inside the ball.

On your backswing many teachers promote the idea that you should flatten your left wrist. When you come back on your downswing the wrists should then be rotating so that the clubface returns square to the target with the right hand rotating over so that it is on top of the grip on your follow through. This is a difficult motion to master for amateurs and results in the left wrist staying above the right and therefore causing an open clubface at impact. Try and eliminate this by concentrating on getting your left elbow to be pointing down at the ground on impact.

Stance is perfect, swing feels great, and the perfect ping when the club hits the golf ball and the flight path of the ball looks like a darn banana. A slice has happened to everyone at one time or another. To cure a golf slice does not take a lot of work, and will make a huge difference in your golf game.

A golf slice is when the golf club face strikes the golf ball off square. This causes the golf ball to spin during flight imparting the dreaded curve that has ruined many a shots. Even the pros will occasionally hit a golf slice, so your goal is to learn the basics of reducing your chance of hitting a banana ball.

When you want to fix a golf slice examine your stance. When you set up for your shot look at your feet. Are they square to your target? Lay a club on the ground aiming at the intended target. The golf slice is a massive impediment to any golfer who wishes to be the best player that they can be. Because in every round with every club you are losing massive amounts of distance and you are only scratching the surface of how good you can be.

To put the problem in context, lets say that you are capable of hitting a 5 wood 200 yards if you hit a straight shot. If you slice with the same club, all things being equal, your ball will only travel around 180 yards.

But if you draw the ball, and all other conditions are equal, the ball will travel around 220 yards because of the topspin that you will impart on the ball which will result in serious yardage when your ball hits the ground.

So you can see from this example that if you can turn a slice into a draw, you will gain 40 yards with your 5 wood.

And this effect will translate into every club you hit in your bag. Could you play golf with those extra yards?

The dreaded slice, the left to right curve in ball flight (opposite for left handed subjects). This is a very common and troublesome problem. This can be caused by a wide array of actions. Also, it can be corrected by a large number of solutions. I am going to explain in a little more detail exactly how this is caused and how to go about correcting your slice.

First of all, how do you manage to put such a curve on the ball? Well it is simple physics, the ball is spinning clockwise which pulls air to its left and moves the ball to the right. The cause is usually one of two things. The first being your club face open at impact. By this, I mean that your club has not come back to be fully square on the ball when the club strikes it. This will cause the ball to slide outward creating that clockwise rotation. The next cure is coming through the ball at an out to in swing path. This means the club slashes across the ball at impact coming toward the body again creating that clockwise spin on your ball. These are the two most common reasons for the slice.

Now you know what causes your problem but on to the good stuff, how do we fix it? Now that we know the cause this will be very simple. You may first close the club face at address to help have it closed at impact. To do this you must rotate the club counter clockwise in your grip before you swing. This will solve most of your slice problems. However, if this does not work then we have a more serious issue, this being the out to inside swing path. Still a pretty simple fix! Next time you are on the practice range stand behind your ball and pick out a target. Now place a tee one foot in front of your ball aiming right at the target. The next few times you swing make sure you follow through directly at that tee. This done over and over will help your muscle memory and get you onto an even swing path!

Slicing is one of the most common problems golfers face. There are a couple of reasons why you are slicing your ball. To learn how to cure your slice, you have to figure out what your problem is. The right grip, stance, and swing are needed to eliminate the slice.

First, start with your grip. You want a grip that is neither too strong or too weak. It’s the weak grip that causes a slice, because this results in an open club face. To fix your grip, position your hands so that your left hand (right hand if you are a lefty), faces the target. Your other hand should face the opposite way.

If you still slice after you adjust your grip, your golf stance may be your problem. Your feet should be shoulder width apart. Your shoulders should be in line with your target. Your right foot needs to point ahead while your left foot should point slightly to the left. At a driving range, practice hitting balls with the correct stance and grip to see if your slice improves. Make slight adjustments to your stance until you are confident that you have found the proper form.

The last way to cure your slice is to fix your swing. Start with your backswing. At the top of your backswing, the shaft should be over your shoulder. The position of your clubface can also create a slice. While you want the clubface open, it should be that way because of the movement of the torso and shoulders. You should not twist your hands or wrist to achieve this.

The backswing is more likely to cause a slice than a downswing, but you should check to see if you have a proper downswing. A good downswing starts with your hips. A follow through is essential.

Even after you figure out what is causing your slice, you’ll need practice to fix it. Don’t be tempted to fall back into what feels right–that’s what causes your slice. If you keep practicing with a proper grip, stance, and swing, you’ll find that the proper way will feel natural.

You know that feeling when you tee off, and you can tell by the feel of the swing that you’re in trouble already? Then you get to watch as your ball arches proudly to the right, over the next fairway and into the woods, with you yelling “FORE!” after it and then trying to hide inside the ball washer out of sheer embarrassment? Yup. You’ve got the slice.

I think I’ve cornered the market for the most acute slice known to man. That first statement is true (except the ball washer thing, I don’t like water). I’ve actually done that on too many occasions. It might have been funny, and I think I actually did laugh just to avoid total embarrassment when my buddies were ribbing the daylights out of me for it, but it was so unbelievably frustrating, I was ready to sell my clubs and take up mini putt.

I signed up for 6 lessons to try to cure it. Cost me $500, and all it did was make me think too much about ball physics and swing mechanics. Cured my slice alright…I would just turf, top, skull or sky the ball and get nowhere because I was over thinking instead of playing the game. That became more frustrating because of the money I had spent on getting worse. Granted, if I could have afforded to continue the lessons, it would have improved. Pros have their place and they’re good at their craft, so I mean no offense to them. Mine was a great guy. Just couldn’t afford to keep paying for the lessons.

I needed to figure out what was causing my slice on my own and find a way to cure it. Yup. That worked real good, too. I’m NOT a pro, and really didn’t have a clue what I was looking for. I did eventually figure it out, and found an appropriate way to resolve it, but you’d be surprised at how long that can take without the knowledge of what factors can cause a slice to begin with. Things like grip, swing plane, address, backswing, breaking your wrists, cupping your wrists, alignment, stance, and the list goes on. Don’t get discouraged by the list. It’s usually only one or two that are causing your slice. You just need to find out which one(s). Not so hard to do when you know what to look for.

The correct grip seems insignificant, but it can have a tremendous effect. Start with that, for sure. Finding the right swing system is what worked for me. It also helped with a host of other things affecting my game as well.

You CAN learn to love the game again, and it doesn’t have to take long or cost a fortune. Just avoid the quick fixes your friends give you…unless they’re a scratch golfer.
