Learning basic tennis strokes is essential to setting the stage for better play in the future. Fail to learn these basics early on and you will struggle with overcoming bad playing habits for years to come.

While there are a variety of strokes that new and advanced players can use in tennis, the novice should concentrate on the two main strokes first, before moving on to the more advanced techniques and movements used in more advanced play.

There are two basic tennis strokes that every player must master in order to be competent on the court: the groundstroke and the overhead. These are necessary in order to compete on any level, and should be mastered first.

The best way to learn proper stroke technique is to find a trained coach to get you started on a lifelong enjoyment of the game. Most newcomers to tennis spend a few months perfecting their technique and game with a trainer before hitting the courts on their own. If this is not an option, these simple tips should help get you started learning the two basic strokes listed above.

When learning the groundstroke, remember these important guidelines:

1: Always begin your groundstroke with a slight, short backswing.

2: Use a shortened grip on the club until mastering this all-important tennis stroke

3: Use a regular type of follow-through. Don’t try to be fancy here. The important thing is to learn the stroke first.

4: Try lengthening your backswing at a slow pace.

5: Slide the grip toward the handle.

6: Remember, in basic tennis for beginners, you will drop feed first! Second, doing your short drop feed is fine, and lastly, following the short drop feed, you will feed from your racquet.

7: Begin slowly and usually try to end with a run.

When practicing overheads, be sure to:

1: Begin your swing at point of contact, slowly presenting a bigger swing can

2: Stand close to the net, followed by slowly moving backward.

3: Begin with an incredibly soft-feed right to the racquet.

4: Practice for short periods of time (less than 30 minutes) in order to not tire your arm and stay fresh and alert. Some players, however, many find that they get so lost in the game that they can practice for hours. If this is the case, and you aren’t experiencing any negative side effects (swollen tendons and muscles or overall arm soreness), than by all means practice away! No matter how long your practice session, be sure to have them frequently. Several times a week is most commonly recommended, especially for beginners.

5: Begin advanced drills as soon as you’ve mastered this basic swing Whatever swing you’re working on, always be sure to practice precise technique, featuring the exact form and bodylines needed, and proper movements!

5. Do keep your arms straight and palms down

Pulling up with your arms, down, or curving them in any way can put unnecessary stresses on your back muscles and make you lose proper form.

While football is considered one of America’s greatest pastimes, few know the secrets of throwing the ball properly. A proper football pass is a perfect spiral delivered directly to the target. With that in mind, this article will attempt to explain some methods that actual football coaches use to teach their quarterbacks the right way to throw.

When trying to throw the perfect spiral, there are three things that you need to consider: the positioning of your hand, the release of the ball, and the timing of the whole pass movement. As far as gripping the football goes, many coaches recommend that you grip the ball with your ring finger placed on the first lace of the football. Your pinky should also grip the laces, and the best positioning for the pinky is between the next two laces up from the first. This usually varies from player to player, due to hand size and preference. For instance, Michael Vick of the Philadelphia Eagles is a highly respected quarterback who keeps his fingers on laces one and four, respectively.

When it comes to the actual throw of the ball, it’s recommended that you hold the ball with as tight of a grip as possible. This tends to aid the spiral’s spin, making it easier to catch for the receiver. After pulling back for the throw, you’re going to want to make sure that you are on your last step before you take the throw is with the foot that you are throwing with. Simply put, if you are throwing with your right hand, your right foot should be forward. One little trick that many coaches use to help their players develop aim in their throws is to point at where they want to throw with the big toe of their leading foot. This helps the body to rotate properly and to ensure a throw in the right direction. When it comes to releasing the ball, you should release when your wrist is cocked at a 90 degree angle from your upper arm. Immediately after releasing the throw, flick your wrist in a downward direction. This causes the ball to spin, and when done properly can result in a perfect spiral throw.

Now that you can see some of the basics of getting a good throw down, it’s time to practice. Just be sure to watch what is going wrong when you try to make a pass so that you can better correct the problem in the future. It’s all just a process of getting your body used to doing the proper motion.

As we all know it is a difficult game that we are passionate about. It is also not easy to improve. Not because of ability, but more often because of time and not knowing what to practice during that time. It is hard to get to the driving range enough to groove a new move. The reason I bring the ball on the range is to demonstrate how each player can improve at home. It helps if you can hit balls for hours and hours. However, if you can put in a few minutes a day of well focused repetitions at home, you would be amazed what that will do to your game.

Now, you can use any type of ball, pillow, or pot to work on your swing. I recommend a basketball because it is big and when properly inflated weighs between 7-9 pounds. This means that it will help develop some of your core golf muscles at the same time as you develop your swing. Since the ball has some weight to it, it will help develop some golf muscle endurance.

The great part of practicing this way is that you really see what a strong backswing position looks and feels like. We are going to focus on the shoulder turn. There are many players out there that don’t turn their shoulders to their full capability, and that causes them to lose power and consistency.

The drill is simple in nature, but often the simplest drills are the most effective.

The Basketball Back Swing Drill

1.Hold your basketball between your hands and get into your golf stance.

2.Start your back swing.

3.Stop and hold your backswing position when your left arm is parallel to the ground.

4.Turn and look at your basketball. If you are in great position your ball should be in front of your chest.

5.Repeat as many times as you can.

If you have made a proper turn you hands will stay in front of your chest. If you see any still photos of the best players in the world, they all get to this position. This position is the key to an effective backswing. If you can keep your hands in front of your chest, you will keep your club on the proper line (swing plane), create more power, and use less energy to hit better shots.

If you follow the steps in the drill, and when you get to step 4 and you find that your ball is not in front of your chest it means you are out of position. This will make it much harder to hit great shots. If your ball swings out around your body and ends up behind you it means you did not turn your shoulders enough during your backswing. This will make your swing very flat and lack power.
