I grew up on a golf course. Mine was the perfect golfing family. Our surname was identified with one of the greatest golfers of the 20th century, Bobbie Locke (no relation though!). My father courted my mother on the golf course and she learnt to play and my brothers did too. Learning the mind/body game is long overdue if you are serious in your pursuit of high performance and excellence in golf or business. Without learning golf, one cannot play golf properly. But learning golf can be fun and be really enjoyable.

Equipment

Equipment should “fit” the golfer as to length, weight, and “feel”. Equipment is supplied at the beginners and intermediate levels. Golf equipment for a training program is inexpensive, portable and is definitely used in the convenience of your home. These people — who spend untold zillions of dollars on equipment, lessons, magazines, books, and assorted paraphernalia — are the ones for whom this is written. The main reason, I think, is because the secrets make golf seem far more difficult than purveyors of equipment, golf travel, golf lessons and golf magazines care to admit.

Tricky obstacles are part and parcel of the game of golf and whilst we would all like to avoid the tricky shots, any successful golfer needs to know how and have the confidence to get out of the tricky situations that a round of golf will throw at you. Golf courses are designed to challenge the golfer and no golfer is immune from mistakes and the consequences of penalty shots if you are not armed to deal with them. Try these golf tips down the range and add them to your golf swing armoury.

The most important part in getting out of a difficult situation on a golf course is knowing your limits and therefor playing within yourself. It is far more prudent in the long run to not go for the straight line to the hole if you have large obstacles such as large trees in the line with your projected flight path. You must realise very quickly that maybe a chip backwards to the fairway is the smart thing to do, the consequences of playing that straight line shot and hitting a tree could be disastrous.

If you are confident however and you do find yourself off the fairway behind a tree, you can hit a low hook or a cut to go around the obstructions but you must know your limits so this does need practicing down the golf range. To achieve the hook or the slice you need to set up your golf swing with slightly wider stance but also line your body up to the right of the obstacle if you are going to hook to the left and to the left if you are going to slice it right. Taking a normal straight swing, you need to twist the club slightly towards the direction you want the ball to go. So, if you want to hook the ball from right to left around a tree. Set up pointing to the right but close the face a little. Use a normal straight swing and the ball should start off right but curve to the left. As stated earlier do not try this shot for the first time during a round of golf, practice it first.

Another difficult recovery shot is in a greenside bunker but at the furthest point from the hole, where basically you find yourself having to fly over say 15 yards of bunker but only have 10 yards of green to land on. You play this short differently to a normal bunker shot as you do not open the face of the club at all. You use a forceful swing but remember to complete the shot with a high follow through.

Finally we need to consider the buried sand shot. This shot is quite scary for beginners but is should not be. You have to get the club under the ball so you have to hit the ball around two inches behind the ball. You have to hit down on the shot but with a forceful swing. As you are hitting down the follow through will be quite short and the not much sand will fly out either, The ball will have virtually no spin on it. Remember to complete the shot do not quite else you will not clear the sand.

For most golfers it is the golf slice that gives us the most headaches out on the golf course. But, for many others who hook the golf ball, the problem can be just as frustrating. So, how can you stop hooking the golf ball and begin hitting more fairways? It’s easier than you might think and I’m going to show you how to get immediate results.

Stance – Position the ball in the middle or a little forward in your stance. For most golfers who hook the ball I see them position the ball too far back in their stance. You want to keep the ball in the middle or even with your left heel (if you’re right-handed). Make sure you position your feet toward your target line. Both of the tips of your toes should be even, or a little to the left of the target line. This more open stance will help reduce the chances of hooking the golf ball. Don’t position your left foot more forward in your stance than your right. Keep them even.

Grip – Grip the club with your hands facing straight down. Golfers who hook the ball tend to set up with their right hand facing too far toward the left side. You want to make sure the “V” formation your hands create by holding the golf club is pointing straight up to your nose. This will go a long way in eliminating a golf hook. The other aspect to a proper golf grip that will eliminate hooking the ball is grip strength. Try not to grip the club too firmly. What happens with an overly firm grip is that when you swing your right hand will turn over and come around, automatically causing you to hook the ball. Use a little less strength in your grip and you should immediately start seeing better results.

Weight – You want to be sure that after your backswing your weight is more on your left foot. Many times a golfer will hook the ball due to the majority of their weight being on their right foot, or back foot. By doing that, you can rest assured you will hook the golf ball every time. It creates a closed clubface by forcing you to come around with the club. If you or you see someone else hit a snap-hook, this is what happened. Be conscious of where your weight is when you finish your golf swing and you can correct this problem immediately.

These are just a few simple tips to help in eliminating that dreaded golf hook. By simply going to the driving range and putting these tips into practice you will start to see immediate results that will translate into lower scores out on the course.

Who else wants to increase the distance of our swing? Practically all of us, I should think. To that end, 90% of inexperienced golfers seek out golf swing instructions. We are inspired by news stories of the great golfers – how far they can hit the golf ball, the great distance of their drives, etc.

So we avidly search for golf swing instructions on the internet. We look for special classes. We subscribe to golf magazines and watch golf on TV and cable. All this to look for that special edge with which to beat the golf course and grind our golf buddies into the dirt. If you studied NLP, you would ask these two questions:

1) Who is the best golfer in the world of all time?
2) What are the differences between him and me?

The answer to the first question is unarguably Tiger Woods. He burst onto the golfing scene like a meteor – a true prodigy. And yet, unlike many prodigies, he managed to retain his top form year after year for practically a decade now. So, what is the answer to question number two? What does he have that we do not?

On the mental aspect, clearly he is mentally very tough. When he starts strongly, he very often manages to remain ahead of his competitors, shrugging off their pressure. When he does not start well, he never gives up. Not only that, but he also has the ability to continuously put pressure on his opponents, chasing after them until they inevitably cracked. One important fact about him is that he is very consistent. You rarely hear of him making any major mistakes.

Getting back to his swing – when he first caught the notice of reporters, Tiger Woods was considered a big hitter, often hitting the ball farther than most of his opponents. Should we try to imitate his swing from this period? No, because he clearly abandoned his old method of hitting the ball despite his success with it. Kibitzers offered up many reasons, among them the excuse that his old power swing caused too much strain on the body and was beginning to affect his health. Regardless of the true reason, even a casual analysis will show that Tiger Woods’ new swing is less powerful, but much more consistent. His new results after he mastered the new swinging technique clearly proves it. You no longer hear about his spectacular drives nowadays. Instead, reporters talk about his consistency and how he makes fewer mistakes. They complain that his game is boring, and yet he holds top position even more often than in the past.

So how does Tiger Woods achieve his spectacular performance? Apparently, by using what some experts call a “one plane swing”. One of his major rivals, Vijay Singh also apparently uses a “one plane swing”. While both of them have unique features in their swing, there are many common threads which tie them into followers of the “one plane swing” school, pioneered by Ben Hogan and Jim Hardy. One unique aspect of this type of swing is that you employ a more natural rotary swinging motion whereby you match the arm and shoulder planes throughout the swing. Compared to this, the “two plane swing” used by Jack Nicklaus attempts to perfectly time and blend the relatively flat rotation of the body with the upright swinging of the arms.

Before you try looking for golf swing instructions, you are well advised to decide which kind of golf swing you want to learn. At the very least, make sure your golf instructor knows the difference. One common quality of the worst golfers is that they mix in components of both the “one plane swing” and the “two plane swing” into their own swing, making a horrible mess of their game.
